What slope means and how to find it

Slope measures how steep a line is and which way it goes. It is the change in y divided by the change in x between any two points on the line, often called rise over run. A slope of 2 means y goes up 2 for every 1 step to the right.

What slope tells you

Picture walking along a line from left to right. Slope says how much you climb or drop for each step forward. A slope of 3 is a steep climb, a slope of 1/2 is gentle, a slope of 0 is flat, and a negative slope means the line goes down as you move right.

In context, slope is a rate. If a plant is 4 cm tall in week 1 and 10 cm tall in week 4, and it grows steadily, the slope is (10 − 4) divided by (4 − 1), which is 2 cm per week. Reading the units of a slope, y-units per x-unit, is often the fastest way to understand what it means.

Slope is the same between any two points on a straight line. That is what makes the line straight, and it is why you can use whichever two points are easiest to read.

The slope formula and the four kinds of slope

For two points (x₁, y₁) and (x₂, y₂), the slope is m = (y₂ − y₁) / (x₂ − x₁). Subtract in the same order on the top and the bottom: if you start with the second point's y, start with the second point's x too.

Every line falls into one of four cases:

Worked example: slope from two points

The order of the two points does not matter as long as you keep it the same on top and bottom. Swapping which point comes first gives (3 − 11) divided by (2 − 6), which is −8 divided by −4, or 2: the same slope.

ProblemFind the slope of the line through (2,3) and (6,11).

  1. m=y2−y1x2−x1

    Start from the slope formula.

  2. m=11−36−2

Substitute, keeping the points in the same order on top and bottom.

  3. m=84

The rise is 8 and the run is 4.

  4. m=2

Simplify: y increases by 2 for every 1 that x increases.

Answerm=2

Worked example: a negative slope and the equation of the line

Negative coordinates are where sign mistakes creep in, so write the subtraction out in full, with parentheses. Once you have the slope, one point is enough to write the equation of the line.

ProblemFind the slope and the equation of the line through (−1,4) and (3,−2).

  1. m=−2−43−(−1)

Subtract the y-values and the x-values in the same order.

  2. m=−64=−32

Subtracting −1 is the same as adding 1, so the run is 4; then simplify the fraction.

  3. y−4=−32(x+1)

Use point-slope form with the point (−1, 4).

  4. y=−32x−32+4

Distribute the slope, then add 4 to both sides.

  5. y=−32x+52

    Combine the constants: 4 is 8/2, and 8/2 minus 3/2 is 5/2.

  6. −32(3)+52=−2

Check with the other point: x = 3 gives y = −2, as it should.

Answerm=−32,y=−32x+52

Reading slope from an equation or a graph

In slope-intercept form, y = mx + b, the slope is the number multiplying x, and b is where the line crosses the y-axis. In y = −3x + 7 the slope is −3. If an equation is in another form, such as 2x + y = 7, solve for y first: y = −2x + 7, so the slope is −2.

On a graph, pick two points where the line crosses grid corners exactly, count the rise (up is positive, down is negative), then count the run to the right. Check the scale on each axis first; if the y-axis counts by 5s, a rise of 2 squares is 10.

Slope also tells you how lines relate. Parallel lines have the same slope. Perpendicular lines have slopes that are negative reciprocals, so a line perpendicular to one with slope −3/2 has slope 2/3.

Where slope fits in California math

In the California Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, slope grows out of ratios and unit rates:

Practice and getting help

Look for slope in everyday rates: the cost of a ride per mile, the incline of a wheelchair ramp, the percent grade on a hill road sign. Ask what the units are, and what a steeper line would mean in that situation.

Questions

What is the formula for slope?

Slope is m = (y₂ − y₁) / (x₂ − x₁): the change in y divided by the change in x between two points on the line.

What does a negative slope mean?

The line goes down from left to right. In a real situation, it means one quantity decreases as the other increases, like the water left in a draining tank over time.

What is the difference between zero slope and undefined slope?

A horizontal line has zero slope because y does not change. A vertical line has undefined slope because x does not change, so the formula would divide by zero.

Is slope the same as rate of change?

For a straight line, yes: the slope is the constant rate at which y changes per unit of x. For a curve the rate of change varies, and you can find an average rate of change between two points.

What grade learns slope in California?

Slope is introduced by name in grade 8, building on unit rates and proportional relationships from grades 6 and 7. It is used throughout Algebra I and Geometry.
