Grade 1 math
Grade 17 units and 21 lessons. Helio talks each one through and draws each step on a board.
Units
Adding and subtracting within 20
6 lessons- Word problems within 20Solve stories up to 20 where things are added, taken away, put together or compared, with a drawing and a number sentence, and say what the answer counts.
- Adding three numbersAdd three numbers whose total is at most 20 by finding two to add first, and solve stories that join three groups.
- Properties of additionSee that 4 + 7 and 7 + 4 make the same total, and that three numbers can be added in any order, so you can start with the easy part.
- Subtraction as a missing addendSolve a take-away like 10 − 8 by asking what number added to 8 makes 10, and check it by adding.
- Counting on and backAdd by counting on from the bigger number, take away by counting back, and see that hopping up adds and hopping back takes away.
- Fluency within 10 and make-a-tenKnow adding and take-away facts up to 10 by heart, and make a ten to add and take away up to 20.
The equal sign and missing numbers
2 lessons- The equal signKnow that the equal sign means "is the same amount as", and tell whether number sentences like 7 = 8 − 1 are true or false.
- Finding the missing numberFind the missing number in an adding or take-away number sentence, wherever the box is, and check it.
Counting to 120
1 lesson- Counting to 120Count to 120 starting at any number, and read and write the numbers, using the pattern of tens.
Tens and ones
5 lessons- Tens and onesSee that 10 is a bundle of ten ones, that a number like 47 is some tens and some ones, and read its digits as tens and ones.
- Comparing two-digit numbersCompare two numbers like 47 and 39 by their tens first, then their ones, and write >, = or < to show which is greater.
- Adding within 100Add a small number, or a tens number like 20, to a number like 34, using tens and ones.
- Ten more and ten lessFind ten more and ten less than a number like 34 in your head by changing only the tens digit.
- Subtracting multiples of tenTake a tens number away from a tens number, like 80 − 30, by taking tens from tens.
Measuring length
2 lessons- Ordering objects by lengthPut three things in order from shortest to longest, and use a helper, like a string, to compare two things that cannot be put side by side.
- Measuring with length unitsSay how long something is by counting same-size pieces laid end to end, with no gaps and none on top of each other.
Time and data
2 lessons- Telling timeTell and write the time to the hour and half hour on a clock with hands and on a digital clock.
- Organizing and reading dataSort answers into up to three groups, show the counts in a table and a bar picture, and tell how many in each group, how many in all and which has more.
Shapes and equal parts
3 lessons- Defining and non-defining attributesTell what makes a shape what it is, like how many sides it has and being closed, from what does not matter, like color and size, and draw shapes from clues.
- Composing shapesPut flat shapes together to make a new shape, and put solid shapes together to make a bigger one.
- Halves and fourthsCut circles and rectangles into two or four equal shares, call them halves, fourths and quarters, and see that more shares make smaller pieces.
