Grade 2 math

Grade 27 units and 26 lessons. Helio talks each one through and draws each step on a board.

Units

  1. Adding, subtracting and word problems

    2 lessons
    1. One-step and two-step word problems within 100Solve one-step and two-step adding and taking-away stories up to 100, draw a tape, and write a number sentence with ? for the missing number.
    2. Fluency within 20Add and take away within 20 quickly by making a ten, using doubles and thinking of adding, and know by heart what any two numbers up to 9 add to.
  2. Equal groups

    2 lessons
    1. Odd and even numbersTell if a group of up to 20 things is odd or even by making pairs, and write an even number as the same number added twice.
    2. Arrays and repeated additionFind how many are in rows of up to 5 rows and 5 columns by adding the rows, and write the adding number sentence.
  3. Place value to 1,000

    4 lessons
    1. Hundreds, tens and onesSee that a number with three digits has hundreds, tens and ones, and that 100 is a bundle of ten tens.
    2. Counting by 5s, 10s and 100sCount up to 1,000, skip-count by 5s, 10s and 100s, and say which digit changes.
    3. Reading and writing numbers to 1,000Read and write numbers up to 1,000 in digits, in words and in expanded form, including numbers with a zero.
    4. Comparing three-digit numbersCompare two numbers with three digits by looking at the digits, and write the answer with >, = or <.
  4. Adding and subtracting big numbers

    5 lessons
    1. Adding and subtracting within 100Add and take away up to 100 using tens and ones, and check a take-away by adding.
    2. Adding four two-digit numbersAdd up to four two-digit numbers: add all the tens, add all the ones, and put them together, even when the ones make new tens.
    3. Adding and subtracting within 1,000Add and take away up to 1,000 with blocks, drawings and writing, trading tens and hundreds when needed.
    4. Mental addition and subtraction of 10 or 100Add or take away 10 or 100 in your head for numbers from 100 to 900, and say which digit changes.
    5. Explaining why strategies workTell why our ways work: adding tens and ones, trading ten ones for a ten, adding in any order, and checking by adding.
  5. Measuring length

    6 lessons
    1. Measuring with rulers and tapePick a ruler, yardstick, meter stick or measuring tape, and measure how long something is by lining it up at zero.
    2. Measuring twice with different unitsMeasure one thing in inches and in centimeters, and tell why a bigger unit gives a smaller number.
    3. Estimating lengthsMake good guesses of length in inches, feet, centimeters and meters using sizes you know, pick a unit that fits, and check by measuring.
    4. Comparing lengthsMeasure two things and say how much longer one is than the other, with a unit.
    5. Length word problemsSolve story problems about lengths up to 100 in the same unit by drawing a tape and writing a number sentence with ? for the missing number.
    6. Number linesShow numbers as lengths from 0 on a number line, and show adding and taking away up to 100 as jumps.
  6. Time, money and data

    4 lessons
    1. Telling time to five minutesTell and write the time to five minutes on clocks with hands and on number clocks, and use a.m. and p.m.
    2. Counting moneyCount dollars and mixed coins, use the $ and ¢ signs, and solve money story problems.
    3. Line plotsMeasure several things to the nearest inch, show the lengths on a line plot, and read the plot to answer questions.
    4. Picture graphs and bar graphsDraw a picture graph and a bar graph where each picture or step is one vote, and use them to put together, take apart and compare.
  7. Shapes and equal parts

    3 lessons
    1. Recognizing and drawing shapesKnow and draw shapes by how many sides and corners they have, and name triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons and cubes.
    2. Partitioning rectangles into squaresCut a rectangle into rows and columns of same-size squares and count the squares to find the total.
    3. Halves, thirds and fourthsSplit circles and rectangles into two, three or four equal shares, call them halves, thirds and fourths, and see that equal shares can have different shapes.
